Whether you’re recovering from an accident, from childbirth, or from a long bout with Covid 19, it’s important to find safe and healthy exercises for yourself to do during recovery. Remember, the best exercise for your body to begin is one that it is willing to do—you don’t need to push with something that will strain or hurt you. Recovery is about building slowly, not about pain. What are some low impact exercises that can be safe during recovery?
Walking is low cost, low maintenance, and low pressure, making it great for beginning recovery. Depending upon your skill level and physical capacity after illness or accident, you might need to begin slowly. Remember, your job is to build your strength , not to condemn yourself for not going as quickly as you’d hope. Whether this means once around the track, or once around the block, or to the mailbox and back, beginning and sustaining movement is the critical part.
Because swimming is easy on the joints , it makes a great exercise for those in recovery. Local community centers, YMCA’s, and even hotels can have swimming classes available to you, even in winter. Choose something in which you are able to build strength gradually and exercise at your current level of mobility. Your physical therapy office might even have an underwater treadmill, which is particularly excellent for rebuilding joints.
Depending upon your strength and disability level, there is a type of yoga for everyone. There are even styles of yoga for those who cannot often bend, or who have trouble with blood pressure dropping and their bodies fainting. But, yoga is also great for those with mobility issues, and balance issues. There are great forms of yoga that can be done from a chair! Remember, again, it’s not about doing things perfectly. It’s about remaining in motion and strengthening your body.
It can be easy to get discouraged after illness, surgical need, or accident strikes, especially if you can’t be back in motion quickly. Practicing loving movement to honor your body is important at any age or strength level. If you like a challenge, there are challenges available in low impact exercises and strength training! Set small goals towards your overall health goals. Remember, it’s important to find exercise you enjoy, so you will do it!
