With winter right around the corner, now is a great time to start thinking about what winter sport is right for me. A number of you have been enjoying the sport of hockey or are possibly curious about the best sport EVER. Hockey is played indoors on NHL or Olympic sized sheets of ice in arenas, or out on the small ponds or flooded areas in your local parks that the city has provided. More and more people are enjoying this dynamic sport. Hockey provides a great total body workout that will challenge your balance, muscles, and general cardiovascular system. Let's look at some of the many benefits.
No matter if you have aspirations of playing like Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, Amanda Kessel, or just playing with friends or your kids, this is a great exercise. Learning to skate is just the start of the fun. You get a great leg workout while challenging your core muscles to control the rest of your body while learning to skate. Learning the basics of starting and stopping along with skating backwards, and fine tuning your balance will open up a new world of enjoyment from this fantastic sport. Once you are somewhat comfortable with that, you get the stick and puck involved and that is really where the fun starts! The passing, shooting, and general puck control are great ways to tie in the upper body to the core and the legs, and then you are talking about a total body workout.
Cardiovascular benefits are great with skating and hockey in general. From a novice to a seasoned pro, you will burn a ton of calories while skating and playing this fantastic game.
Don’t worry about getting too hot because you have the lower temperatures inherent to the sport that help cool you down no matter if it is inside or outside. Add in the fact that you are skating at a faster speed than you would be walking or running, you get the air passing around you to help you stay comfortable while playing. This benefit will allow you to work hard on cardiovascular fitness and not feel like you are getting overheated.
What are you waiting for? Get to the rink, put on the skates, and get the journey started. Before you know it you will be talking about the “dangle” you did around that “pylon” before you went “bar down” with your new “twig”, or how you took and “sniped” the goalie for a “top shelf” goal then did a nice “celly” afterwards. Well, the lingo will come in time as you work on your “flow”. If there is a bump in the road and you get a bump, bruise, sprain, or strain come see me, I am well versed to get you back on your “edges” in no time. I can focus on what you need to elevate your skating and your overall game.
