How to Make Your Physical Therapy Easier to Endure

Multifuse Team • Jul 08, 2021

After you’ve suffered an injury, it’s likely you will need to undergo physical therapy. Depending on your injury, you could be in physical therapy for a long time. It’s important to find ways to make your therapy easier so you can have a smooth road to recovery.

The Right Therapist

Your first step is finding a physical therapist to work with. It can be helpful to do plenty of research at this stage. You don’t want to just go with the first physical therapist you find. With whoever you choose, you should make sure they are certified. Working with a licensed physical therapist will ensure you are getting proper treatment. In addition to meeting qualifications, you want to find a physical therapist that you get along with. You will be spending lots of time with them, so you want to make sure it is comfortable and enjoyable.

Set Goals

Setting goals for physical therapy can help you have something to work for and you can measure your progress. To start off, you should create your overall goal of physical therapy. For example, you might want to regain a full range of motion at the end of your therapy or perhaps you want to get back to a point where you can play sports. After creating a couple of long-term goals, you should break these goals down into short-term goals. With short-term goals, you break down your overall goal into something achievable. With all goals, you want to have a time frame in mind, but keep it realistic. Keep in mind that not all goals will be achieved while in physical therapy. Your physical therapist should give you exercises and activities to work on your own to help you reach your goals after therapy.

Pain Management

As you work through an injury, you will be experiencing some pain. This can make it challenging to continue. However, if you find ways to manage your pain it can become easier. You can start off by taking some basic pain medications. These can be over-the-counter or prescribed medications from your doctor. There are also many natural pain relievers you can try including willow bark, turmeric, and ginger. It is also possible to relieve pain by taking a hot bath or shower and giving your body plenty of rest.

Service Dogs

A service dog can be helpful to you in many ways. When walking around, a service dog can help you with balance and walking and even catch you if you fall over. Some dogs are even trained to carry items that you might not be able to carry on your own. In addition to the training they have, service dogs also provide a lot of emotional support to their owners. They can provide you with encouragement and they can even motivate you to improve. When picking a therapy dog, you should be considerate of your needs and preferences. Some dogs such as huskies have more energy than others. This may be encouraging, or it may wear you out sooner. You want to find a dog that will help you heal and provide the support you need.

Follow Through

There is a lot of work that you will do in your physical therapy sessions. You will also be given exercises that you can do on your own. If you want your physical therapy to go well, you need to make sure you are actually doing these exercises. This extra work you do can make a huge difference and it may actually be the main factor driving your recovery. In addition to following through with the exercises you are given, you should follow any other advice your physical therapist offers. This includes changes to any of your habits or even your diet. If you want to get better, you need to make sure you put in the work.

Find Ways to Stay Motivated

Motivation is an important part of your physical therapy. It can be easy to become discouraged, so you want to find ways to keep yourself motivated so you can continue to progress. There are lots of ways to stay motivated during physical therapy. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to track your progress. Doing so allows you to look back on how far you’ve come and it can encourage you to keep going. One option is to journal your progress. In your journal, you can write out what you achieved, what was difficult, and how you felt about your journey. Another way you can stay motivated is to find someone else experiencing a similar injury. You can share stories and advice with each other. It can be motivating if you don’t have to go through it alone.

Communicate with Your Therapist

To get the most from your physical therapy sessions, you need to be honest and communicate with your physical therapist. The more information they have, the more help they can provide you. For example, if you weren’t able to do your at-home exercises, let them know. They then can find ways to help you fit it in based on the circumstances in your life. You should also communicate any pain you are feeling and if things are getting worse, not better. Additionally, if you have any questions, you should ask your physical therapist. It’s helpful for you to have as much information as possible too.

Be Patient

It takes time to heal and recover after an injury. Don’t expect immediate results. You need to invest time into your physical therapy and actively participate in it. Be patient with yourself and with the process as a whole. The more you keep at it, the closer you will be to your recovery.

When doing physical therapy, you want to make sure you are getting the most out of it. In order to do so, there’s a lot you can do to make the process easier. Go into physical therapy with an open mind and be ready to find your path to recovery.

Keeping up with physical therapy during the holidays is tough. There are so many other things to do - cooking, parties, shopping, travel, and visiting with family and friends. But if you're in physical therapy over the holidays, there's a reason. You're having pain, or not moving as well as you want to. These issues place limitations on your life, which are going to affect your ability to do things - like cooking, partying, shopping, traveling, or enjoying time with friends and family. So even though keeping up with your PT this time of year is tough, it's important. That's why we're going to give you our best tips to help you through the holidays. Plan Some of what makes the holidays challenging is the crazy schedule. To survive this, you're going to have to plan ahead. We're not just talking about appointments on your calendar, either (although those are important). Here are some things to think about planning ahead: Your PT appointments Your schedule is busy during the holidays. So is your PT's. Plan and schedule your appointments in advance. You'll get the times and days that work best for you, and you'll already have your PT appointments in your calendar to plan other things around. Your exercise Hopefully you have a regular time to exercise. With the holiday mania about to shake up your routine, that time may no longer work. Think about when you're going to exercise ahead of time and you'll stay consistent. Your diet Healthy eating often gets derailed during the holidays. Putting low quality fuel into your body won't help you feel better. Think about planning what you're going to eat ahead of time. We're not saying to skip every holiday treat offered to you, but maybe think about which ones you really need to have, and which ones you can skip in advance. It makes saying "no thanks" to that third slice of fruitcake easier. Modify We're realistic. We understand that life isn't the same during the holidays as it is during the rest of the year. That's part of what makes this time of year special! With that in mind, our next set of tips focuses on making modifications to help you get through the holidays successfully. Your PT Plan When you planned your PT appointments out well in advance, you might have run into some challenges. Talk to your therapist about how you might be able to modify your plan of care through the holidays to make it all work. Maybe you're going to PT three times a week and you can only come twice a week for a week or two. Plan this sort of thing in advance with your PT and you can work together to come up with the best plan. Your exercise Exercise is so important, it made our list twice. Now that you know when you'll exercise, you might have to modify your routine to make it fit. Again, we recommend talking with your PT to see what you can do. Maybe your home exercise program can be modified so you can do everything in the kitchen during downtime when you're cooking up your holiday feast. Maybe you can reduce the number of exercises to focus on maintaining the gains you've made until things settle down. Your schedule In your planning in advance (see how important it is?) you might have found that your normal routine wasn't going to work. If your PT appointments or exercise time is usually right after work and you've now got commitments during that time, maybe you can move them to the morning before work. If you've been exercising outside, the shortened days may move you into the gym. Be flexible and consider temporarily modifying your schedule and your routine to make it work better during the holiday season. You can always go back to your previous routine after. The holidays are a special time of year. Keeping up with your health and your physical therapy can be challenging during this time. But you don't have to fall behind. With some planning and flexibility, you can stay healthy, survive the holidays and head into next year with good momentum!
